Balun Hybrids include an impedance balun (2:1, 4:1, 6:1, 9:1, 16:1, etc) and a 1:1 balun (choke) in a single enclosure. Use on OCF, loop, terminated dipoles and similar coax fed antennas requiring an impedance transformer Suppresses common mode current on the coax outer braid (prevents your dipole from acting as a tripole!).
Ladder Line Fed Antennas
Ladder-Line-Fed Antennas
High-efficiency multiband wire antennas that use a ladder-line section as an impedance transformer for broad, practical coverage with manageable total span. Ideal for modest lots, portable masts, and permanent installs.
Example: ZS6BKW ~88 ft total yet covers 80–6 m (ATU on some bands).
Trim wire ends and keep ladder line near spec (~40 ft) to pull bands into a comfortable tuner range.
Choose 500 W / 1.5 kW / 5 kW baluns. Upgrade later by swapping the balun.
Quick setup checklist
- Center support ≳ 30 ft, ends ≳ 15 ft; total angle 120–180°.
- Run ladder line vertically/clear for ~40 ft to the coax-interface balun.
- Weatherproof junctions; add a CMNF at the radio to reduce braid-borne noise.
Tip: Pair with a MAXI-CHOKER™ at the feed-point (where applicable) and a CMNF at the radio for a quieter station.
